Rise Up: Women on the Move

Rise Up: Women on the Move was the flagship conference hosted by Get Movin, aimed at empowering young women ages 18-25 to find and know their worth and their purpose in life and in their community and providing young women tools to help them to be successful in life.

The inaugural conference was held January 26, 2019 in Compton, CA, and consisted of breakout sessions focusing on:

  • Dating
  • Finding your purpose
  • Knowing your worth
  • Money Management
  • Time Management

The conference was free to all participants, and we were able to reach ~20 young women.

We were blessed to have Dr. Sharoni Little as our keynote speaker!

Dr. Sharoni Denise Little, CEO, The Strategist Company, LLC, is an organizational and leadership development consultant, educator, corporate trainer, global facilitator, and media commentator, who helps organizations and community leaders devise evidence-based strategies and solutions to grow, strengthen, and transform their vision, strategy and outcomes. A Professor of Clinical Business Communication at the USC, Marshall School of Business, Dr. Little is an author and renowned scholar, who shares her expertise both domestically and internationally on social justice, workplace inclusion and equity, implicit bias, strategic leadership, and global strategy.

In addition to her scholarly and advisory efforts, Dr. Little is an educational and social advocate who currently partners with the Aspen Institute, Center for Native American Youth, The Obama Foundation, Children and Nature Network, California State University, Los Angeles, College of Professional and Global Education, where she teaches undergraduate candidates incarcerated at a California State Prison in conjunction with criminal justice reform efforts. Additionally, she was just elected as a Compton College Board of Trustee, is a founding member of the Compton Human Trafficking Task Force, is the Immediate Past Chair of the Los Angeles County’s, Policy Roundtable for Childcare and Development Commission, partners with the Children’s Defense Fund, and sits on several non-profit boards of trustees.

Targeted sessions were led and moderated by distinguished speakers below:

  • Dr. Meghan Brewer: Dr. Meghan Nicole Brewer is a College and Career Counselor and Owner and Founder of Destiny College and Career Advising. She received her Doctorate in Organizational Change and Leadership from the University of Southern California (USC), her Master’s in Counseling from Loyola Marymount University (LMU), and her Bachelor’s in Business/Human Resources also from LMU.  She worked for five Colleges and Universities including LMU, Mr. San Antonio College (Mt. Sac), USC, University of West Los Angeles (UWLA), and Grand Canyon University (GCU). With these organizations, she has worked in the capacity as an Academic Counselor as well as the Assistant Director of Admissions at USC. Proceeding working in higher education, she went to work for Corporate America and became a Human Resource (HR) Manager for Target Corporation and McLane Foodservice. She currently works for the City of Phoenix still in the HR capacity while concurrently running her company.
  • Shaherah White: A child of God first, White is the mother of two and the wife of a loving husband. A passionate ministry leader for young adult women: Virtuous Women, and co-host of the Drunk Girls Bible Study Podcast (Drunk in the Spirit, Drunk in the Word). White is a lover of the Word and how it applies to daily life. A foodie, entrepreneur and artist, White is the owner of Love’s Delicious, a unique dinner service for special events, and Final Details, a gift-giving service for sweethearts.
  • Viergeni White:  Viergeni White is a Mommy, Wifager to @AaronWhiteLA and Doula serving the Los Angeles area. She graduated from Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor’s in Communication Studies. In 2009, she co-founded Slingshot Media, a company with her husband servicing youth within the juvenile and foster care system bring creative arts and life skills by way of workshops.  In 2014 she took to the stage in a two-man self-written show called The Black and White Serieswhere she and her husband through song, dance, theatrics and spokenword told their testimonies in full transparency. She has been featured on Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s online content platform LightWorkers for 2 seasons in a series she created with her husband called TRUTHMARK, bringing a spokenword twist to hot topics such as parenting and marriage. Currently, Viergeni enjoys creating inspiring content with her husband, helping women in childbirth and homeschooling her daughter Claile.
